Keeping your details current with the CRA

Address changes, authorising or cancelling a representative, closing an account you no longer use, and asking for relief.

Anyone who has moved, changed accountant, or is filing on behalf of somebody else and needs to be recognised as doing so.

  1. Change your address

Post from the CRA goes to the last address they hold, including the letters with deadlines on them.

  2. Authorise or cancel a representative

An accountant, a bookkeeper or a family member. Cancelling matters as much as granting, and is the half people forget.

  3. Close an account you have finished with

A payroll or GST/HST account left open keeps expecting returns, and a return that never arrives is what generates the letters.

  4. Ask for relief from penalties or interest

There is a form for asking. Whether it is granted is the CRA's decision and turns on circumstances nothing here knows.

Worth knowing

Changing an address for a business and for a person are different forms against different accounts, and doing one does not do the other.

Fill in the copy you have

Already downloaded it? Bring that file and we'll fill it in. It works the same for a form nobody publishes: a benefits enrolment, an employer's payroll form, anything with boxes in it.
