Extending your stay in Canada
The forms for staying longer, changing the conditions on a permit, or moving between visitor, student and worker status while you are here.
Somebody already in Canada whose document is expiring. There are several versions of this application and which one you use depends on the status you are asking for.
The application to change or extend
Three numbered versions of the same application exist, for visitor, student and worker. They look alike and are not interchangeable.

- IMM 5709 Application to Change Conditions, Extend my Stay or Remain in Canada as a Student191 boxes
- IMM 5710 Application to Change Conditions, Extend my Stay or Remain in Canada as a Worker185 boxes
Family information
Filed with it, as with most applications.
A permanent resident card
A different thing from a permit, with its own application, for somebody who already has permanent residence.
Asking what is in your file
A consent form for an access to information request, which is how people find out where an application stands.
Worth knowing
Which of the three application numbers is yours depends on the status you are applying for, and getting it wrong means starting again. Check the title on the form against what you are asking for before you fill anything in.
We do not advise on status, timing or eligibility. If your document has already expired, that is a question for IRCC or a licensed representative, not for us.
Fill in the copy you have
Already downloaded it? Bring that file and we'll fill it in. It works the same for a form nobody publishes: a benefits enrolment, an employer's payroll form, anything with boxes in it.
